Pneumonia Vaccine

Thousands of seniors in Minnesota get the flu each year. Seniors who have the flu also are more at-risk for getting pneumonia. This can be deadly for some seniors. It’s important to protect yourself and others from pneumonia. You can do this by getting a pneumococcal vaccination (shot). You can go to your doctor to get a pneumococcal shot anytime during the year. In fact, you can get it at the same time you get your flu shot or any other vaccine.

It’s important to note that you cannot get pneumonia from this shot. The most common side effect from a pneumococcal shot is a sore arm for 24 to 48 hours after the shot. If you are age 65 or older, be sure to ask your doctor if you need a pneumococcal shot. There is no co-pay, or charge, for the shot for UCare members.

This chart may help you decide if a pneumococcal shot is right for you.
