Breastfeeding Resources

(Prepaid Medical Assistance Program (PMAP), MinnesotaCare, and UCare Connect members)

Breast milk is the best food for your baby. It’s made especially for your baby, and it’s easier for infants to digest than formula. Breast milk also doesn’t need to be mixed or heated. Breastfeeding for even a short time can help keep your baby from getting infections, illnesses, and allergies.

Get help

If you have questions about breastfeeding, talk to your doctor or midwife. For breastfeeding help, you also can contact

  • WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Breastfeeding Referral Line: 1-877-214-BABY (1-877-214-2229) toll free. You’ll be connected with your local WIC agency, where you can access breastfeeding resources.
  • La Leche League of Minnesota and the Dakotas: 612-922-4996. La Leche is a volunteer organization that organizes breastfeeding support groups and has local breastfeeding volunteers who can help you. When you call the phone number, you will be given information about how to call the volunteers. You may have to leave a voicemail message with your phone number so they can call you back.
  • You can also call the hospital where you delivered, your primary care clinic, or your OB clinic with breastfeeding questions. If your clinic doesn't have a lactation consultant available, the clinic should be able to refer you to the right resource for you.

Breast pumps

After your baby is born, if you return to work or if you have to be away from your baby and would like a breast pump, UCare can provide you with one.* To order a breast pump for home delivery, call the Customer Services phone number listed on the back of your member ID card.

*Eligibility requirements apply. There is a limit of one breast pump every three years for eligible UCare members. Your baby must be born and a medical order is required. Talk with your doctor or midwife.
